Furniture Manufacturer Avoids a Costly Supply Upgrade With an Active Power Filter
The Problem
The site's electrical supply was inadequate for its needs, and new equipment the business wanted to install would have exceeded the available supply capacity. Old, inefficient equipment that needed to be retained was driving a poor power factor of 0.7 lag.
What We Did
A one-week survey and logging period identified significant harmonics alongside the low power factor. We installed a 150A/100kVAr Active Power Filter (APF), which can perform the functions of a static VAr generator and an active filter simultaneously — correcting power factor while also cancelling harmonic currents. Installation took 4-6 hours with a further hour for commissioning, and all work was carried out of hours with no disruption to production.
The Result
Power factor improved from 0.7 to 0.99, freeing up enough capacity within the existing supply for the new equipment to be fitted without an expensive supply uplift or upgrade.
